Upper Sac River
Fly Fishing the Upper Sacramento River is as epic as it gets, 30+ miles of stunning riffle/run/pools, open all year, with rich history & just 30 minutes outside of Redding California, this is a top destination for trout anglers across the west.
Many anglers consider this walk & wade fishery to be the better option for dry fly fishing when it comes down to the lower vs upper sac river debate.
Shasta lake run rainbow & brown trout are in the system, meaning they migrate from the lake to the river and back during spawning season much like the anadromous steelhead.
Matching the hatch is crucial during the season. Stoneflies , salmon, little black, sally & golden, hatch in good numbers throughout the season, as well as midges, mayflies & caddis most notable the October caddis. Skilled anglers will work all water types including the pocket water which is why the famous Ted Fay & Ted Towendolly pioneered the short-line nymphing technique tying weight into the bugs and high sticking pocket water & fast water.
